What GAF Master Elite Means
GAF Master Elite is the highest contractor certification GAF awards. Less than 2% of roofing contractors in North America qualify, and renewal requires meeting the standard every year.
The qualification standards
To become and remain GAF Master Elite, a contractor must:
- Be licensed in their state of operation (we hold Illinois License #RCR-2001-4521)
- Carry adequate insurance, including general liability and workers compensation
- Have a verifiable reputation for excellent work, established through customer reviews and BBB rating
- Maintain a 95%+ customer satisfaction rating across audited installations
- Be in good standing with GAF and pass annual reviews
Why this matters to homeowners
Most roofing contractors will tell you they install GAF shingles. That’s technically true — anyone can buy GAF materials at a supply house. What they can’t do, and what only Master Elite contractors can do, is:
1. Offer the GAF Golden Pledge warranty
The Golden Pledge is GAF’s strongest warranty — 50 years non-prorated coverage on materials AND workmanship, transferable to a new homeowner. Standard manufacturer warranties only cover materials, only for a portion of the time, and exclude installation defects. The Golden Pledge covers everything, including the contractor’s installation, for half a century.
2. Provide manufacturer-backed installation oversight
GAF audits Master Elite installations. They send representatives to job sites unannounced. They review installation photos. The contractor knows they’re being watched, and the manufacturer knows the work meets spec. Standard contractors have no such accountability.
3. File supplemental claims with manufacturer support
When insurance claims involve disputed damage scope, GAF can provide manufacturer-spec documentation that supports a Master Elite contractor’s scope assessment. This dramatically changes the outcome of disputed claims.
How we earned and maintain the certification
Summit Roofing Co. has held GAF Master Elite certification since 2005. We renew every year, which requires re-certifying our license, insurance, customer satisfaction scores, and BBB rating. We invest in ongoing training for our crews on GAF’s installation standards, including the LayerLock technology in current Timberline HDZ shingles and the Cobra ridge ventilation systems we install on every replacement.
The Golden Pledge in plain English
If you choose the Golden Pledge upgrade on your roof installation, here’s what you get:
- 50 years of non-prorated material coverage on the GAF Lifetime Roofing System
- 25 years of workmanship coverage backed by GAF directly (not just by us)
- Smart Choice protection: if anything in the system fails in the first 10 years, GAF covers tear-off, disposal, AND replacement
- Fully transferable if you sell your home (this measurably improves resale value)
- Inspection requirement: GAF sends an independent third-party inspector to verify the installation before issuing the warranty. This is unique in the industry.
