The most direct comparison is GAF Timberline HDZ against Owens Corning Duration. Both are architectural (dimensional) asphalt shingles in similar price ranges, both come with manufacturer warranties, and both are widely available.

Both manufacturers offer impressive-sounding warranty terms, but the practical difference is significant.
GAF Golden Pledge (Master Elite contractor only)

The Golden Pledge’s third-party inspection requirement is the meaningful differentiator. It’s the only major asphalt shingle warranty in the residential market that includes a manufacturer-paid inspector verifying the installation before the warranty is issued.
Real-world performance
In our installations across Springfield over the last decade, both products perform well when properly installed. Field failures we’ve seen on both brands almost always trace to installation issues (improper nailing, inadequate ventilation, missing ice/water shield) rather than material defects. The shingles themselves rarely fail before warranty.
Price comparison
Installed cost is similar. Timberline HDZ runs $115-$135 per square in materials. Owens Corning Duration runs $110-$130 per square. The difference is well within the noise of a quote — choose based on warranty preference and contractor certification, not on this $2-5 per square delta.
Which we recommend
For Summit Roofing customers, we recommend GAF Timberline HDZ with the Golden Pledge warranty. Three reasons:
- Warranty depth: Golden Pledge is the most comprehensive warranty in the industry, including the workmanship and the third-party inspection.
- LayerLock for hail/wind markets: Springfield gets both. The patented nailing zone has shown measurably better resistance in wind events.
- Master Elite oversight: The certification we hold ensures GAF is monitoring our installation quality, which is good for customers.
That said, Owens Corning Duration installed by a Platinum Preferred contractor is also an excellent choice. If you have a contractor preference and they’re a Platinum Preferred installer, the Duration product is a solid roof for 30+ years.
The bigger decision is the contractor, not the brand. A great contractor with either product will outperform a mediocre contractor with either product, every time.
