Indoor Air Quality

Cleaner Air, Without the Snake Oil

Most "air quality" upgrades sold to homeowners are overpriced products that don’t move the needle. We install three things that actually work: better filtration, UV-C sterilization, and humidity control. That’s it.

Media Air Cleaners (MERV 13–16)

Replaces your standard 1" filter with a 4-5" pleated media filter housed in a dedicated cabinet. Captures particles 30× smaller than a standard furnace filter, including pollen, dust mites, smoke, and most bacteria. $650–$1,200 installed. Lasts 6 months.

UV-C Germicidal Lights

Installed inside the air handler near the evaporator coil. UV-C kills mold, bacteria, and viruses as air passes through. Particularly effective for homes with allergy or asthma sufferers. $400–$700 installed.

Whole-Home HEPA

Bypass HEPA filtration that captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. Much more aggressive than media cleaners. $1,800–$3,200 installed. Recommended for serious allergy or chemical sensitivity issues.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Cedar Grove winters dry indoor air to 15-20% relative humidity, which causes dry skin, respiratory irritation, static electricity, and damage to wood furniture and floors. Bypass humidifier mounted on the supply plenum maintains 35-45% RH automatically. $550–$950 installed.

Whole-Home Dehumidifiers

For homes with humidity above 60% in summer (common in older slab-foundation homes), a whole-home dehumidifier improves comfort and prevents mold growth. Aprilaire E100 series typical. $1,400–$2,200 installed.

Ventilation (ERV / HRV)

Energy recovery ventilators bring in fresh outdoor air without losing your conditioned air. Required by code for tightly-built newer homes. Improves CO2 levels and removes VOCs. $1,800–$3,500 installed.

What Won't We Sell You

Products That Don’t Work

The HVAC industry has a long list of "indoor air quality" products that are mostly marketing. We don’t sell them.

  • Ionizers: Generate ozone (a known lung irritant) as a byproduct. Some "ionic" devices have been recalled. Not recommended for occupied spaces.
  • "Magic" UV wands: Handheld UV devices marketed for surface sterilization — mostly novelty products with insufficient exposure time to be effective.
  • Standalone air purifiers as system replacement: Tabletop air purifiers can be useful in single rooms, but they don't substitute for whole-home filtration. We’ll recommend them only when whole-home filtration isn’t feasible.
  • "Salt cave" / Himalayan salt anything: Has no measurable effect on indoor air quality despite the marketing.
  • Plant-based "natural air purification": NASA studies that get cited weren’t scaled to real-room volumes. You’d need ~700 plants per room to make a measurable difference.

How Our IAQ Assessment Works

If you’re considering indoor air quality upgrades, we offer a free assessment. A NATE-certified technician comes to your home with the following equipment:

  • Particle counter: Measures actual airborne particles in different rooms and at different times of day
  • VOC meter: Measures volatile organic compounds (off-gassing from new furniture, cleaners, building materials)
  • CO2 monitor: Measures CO2 buildup, which indicates inadequate ventilation
  • Hygrometer: Measures relative humidity in multiple locations
  • Visual inspection: Existing filter condition, ductwork sealing, return air patterns

You get a written report with the actual numbers (not made-up scare tactics) and a recommendation matched to what your home actually needs. Many homes need nothing beyond a better filter and proper humidity control. Some need more. We’ll tell you straight either way.
